Application for Assistance

The municipality of Parsonsfield administers a General Assistance program for the support of its residents.

General Assistance is a program administered by a municipality for the immediate aid of persons who are unable to provide the basic necessities to maintain themselves or their families.  General Assistance provides "a specific amount and type of aid for defined needs during a limited period of time and is not intended to be a continuing 'grant-in-aid' or 'categorical' welfare program" (§4301(5)). The Department of Human Services General Assistance Program is a 'safety net' program after all other potential and available resources have been utilized.

Pursuant to Title 22 MRSA §4305(4), the municipal officers have adopted an ordinance establishing that program. A copy of the State’s General Assistance Statutes, as copies of the State law are made available to the municipality by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

The Municipality’s General Assistance administrator must issue a written decision within 24 hours of receiving an application.

The Department of Human Services’ toll-free telephone number, to call with a question regarding the General Assistance Program, is 1-800-442-6003.
